Rocky Island and the Murti boulders
Below Samsing the Murti runs through a narrow valley strewn with house-sized boulders. Rocky Island is a riverside spot with a private camp where you can picnic, sit on the rocks or sleep in a tent to the sound of the water.

Rocky Island lies a few kilometres from Samsing on the Murti, which here is still a mountain river, clear and fast, squeezed between forest and huge granite boulders. A private camp on the bank offers tents and simple rooms, and day visitors come for picnics and photographs on the rocks.
The river is beautiful and dangerous. Currents between boulders are strong, the rocks are slippery, and water levels rise quickly after rain upstream in Neora Valley. Do not swim, keep children close and leave the bank at once if the water colour changes. In winter, people sit for hours on the warm stones with tea; that is the right way to use the place.
If you stay overnight, the campfire, the stars and the roar of the river make a fine night. Ask the camp about current rates, food and toilets, and check current status before you travel, as river camps close during the monsoon and after flood damage.
Cost: Car ₹1,000–1,500; camp rates vary
Questions people ask
Good to know
How far is Rocky Island from Samsing?
A few kilometres, about 15–20 minutes by car down a narrow road towards the Murti. Many visitors combine Rocky Island and Suntalekhola in a half-day by car for roughly ₹1,500–2,000 from Samsing. You can also walk if you are fit, though the return is uphill.
Can we swim at Rocky Island?
No. The Murti runs fast between boulders here, with strong currents and sudden rises after rain in the hills. People have drowned in rivers like this. Sit on the rocks, paddle in a shallow edge only if locals say it is safe, and keep children well back.
Is camping at Rocky Island safe?
The private camp is set back from the main channel and closes during the monsoon. Follow the staff's instructions, do not walk on the rocks after dark and keep your tent zipped. Ask about the weather; if heavy rain is forecast, sleep in a room rather than a tent.
