Kitchen gardens and farm life in Ramdhura
Spend a morning in your host family's garden and fields: squash, mustard greens, ginger, chillies, oranges in winter. Then help cook a hill lunch from what you picked.
Most homestays in Ramdhura are farming households, and the food on your plate often comes from a few metres away. Ask your hosts to show you the kitchen garden: squash vines on frames, mustard and radish greens, beans, chillies, ginger and turmeric, and fruit trees, with oranges ripening in winter. Some families keep cows and chickens.
Kalimpong district and Sikkim together grow a large share of India's ginger, and you may see it growing on the terraces. Cardamom grows in shaded patches. Depending on the season, you could help with picking, digging or drying.
Then join the cooking: dal, rice, a vegetable curry, greens fried with garlic and a pickle. These visits are informal and depend on the family's work that day, so ask kindly. A tip or buying some home-grown ginger, oranges or pickles is a good way to say thank you.
