In 2016 Sikkim became India's first state to declare its farming fully organic, after more than a decade of phasing out chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Around Mangan this means small, mixed farms on steep terraces: cardamom under trees, ginger and turmeric, maize, millet, vegetables, mandarin oranges and a few cows or goats.

Ask your hotel in Mangan or a homestay host in Dzongu to arrange a morning with a farming family. Walk the terraces, see how water is channelled from streams, how compost is made, and what is planted when. In winter, oranges and greens; in late summer and autumn, cardamom and ginger.

There is no formal programme, so agree a modest fee in advance, ₹300–600 for a guide and tea is fair, and pay the family if they feed you. Respect fields and fences; walk on bunds, not crops. The paths are steep; wear shoes with grip and carry water.

Cost: ₹300–600 for a local guide and tea (indicative)

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Sikkim really fully organic?

Sikkim was declared a fully organic farming state in 2016, after a phased ban on chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Certification covers the state's agricultural land. In practice, around Mangan you see small mixed farms using compost and traditional methods, though enforcement and markets have their challenges.

Can I visit a farm near Mangan?

Yes, informally. Ask your hotel, a shop owner or a Dzongu homestay host to introduce you to a farming family. There are no ticketed farm tours; agree a small fee for a guide and pay for any food. September to November is the busiest time to see harvests.

What crops grow around Mangan?

Large cardamom is the main cash crop, along with ginger, turmeric, maize, millet, vegetables and mandarin oranges in lower villages. Families also keep cows, goats and poultry. Crops vary with altitude, from warm Teesta-side slopes to cooler ridges above.
