Three nights inside Makaibari tea estate

Three slow nights with a tea worker's family in one of Makaibari's estate villages. Walk out with the pluckers at dawn, visit the factory first run in 1859, taste the flushes side by side and walk the forest paths. From about ₹7,500 per person with meals.

Fare₹7,500 Nights3 Per day₹1,900 Highest1,500m PaceEasy

This is the trip for people who want to understand Darjeeling tea, not just drink it. Instead of a planter's bungalow, you stay with a family in the Makaibari homestay programme, eating what they eat and walking where they work.

The pace is slow on purpose. Three nights give you time for the factory on a working morning, a dawn plucking walk, a tasting, a long walk through the estate's forest patches and an afternoon in Kurseong. Travel is by shared jeep, so the cost stays low.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is the price per person?

Yes. ₹7,500 is per person on twin sharing for Indian nationals, from NJP or Bagdogra and back, as an indicative 2025–26 figure. Solo travellers pay more for rooms and cars; groups of four sharing a car pay less. We round to the nearest ₹500.

Can we start from Bagdogra airport instead of NJP?

Yes. Bagdogra is about 30 minutes from Siliguri and a little further from NJP. Shared autos and taxis link the airport to the Siliguri jeep stands. With a reserved car, the fare from Bagdogra is about the same as from NJP.

Can we change the number of nights?

Yes. Add a night where you want more time, usually in the village stops, or drop one on a tight schedule. Keep at least two nights in any place where you want a clear dawn view, since weather can spoil one morning.

How do I book a Makaibari homestay?

Contact the estate or a homestay coordinator in the Makaibari villages; Kurseong drivers and hotels can also put you in touch. Give dates and numbers, ask for an attached bathroom if you need one, and confirm the rate and meals in advance.

Is three nights too long in one tea garden?

Not if you like slow travel. Three nights let you see the factory on a working day, walk with the pluckers, explore the forest paths and visit Kurseong without rushing. If you prefer to move on, cut to two nights and add a night in Kurseong.

When is the best time for this trip?

March to May and October to November, when plucking and factory work are under way and the weather is good. The monsoon months are productive in the garden but wet and leech-heavy. December to February is quiet in the factory.

Can vegetarians stay in Makaibari homestays?

Yes. Most home meals are vegetable-based, with dal, rice, greens and potatoes. Tell your host when you book. Vegan diets are harder because milk and ghee are common.

Will I be able to visit the factory?

Usually yes in the plucking season, but it depends on the day's work and the estate's current rules. Ask your host or the estate a day ahead. Tastings may carry a fee; check before you start.

Is Makaibari safe for solo women travellers?

Solo women generally find tea estate homestays safe and welcoming, since you are living with a family. Use ordinary care on paths after dark and tell your host your plans. Shared jeeps are a normal way to travel.
