You do not need a private car to see the Dooars. The Dooars line runs from NJP through Malbazar, Chalsa and Madarihat, buses connect every town on the highway, and shared jeeps climb to the hill villages each morning. This loop strings those together into six nights, with homestays at every stop and shared seats in safari jeeps.

The order matters. Gorumara first, close to Siliguri, for watchtower safaris; then up to Samsing for two cool nights among tea and the river valleys of Rocky Island and Suntalekhola; then east to Jaldapara, the biggest rhino park in the region, before the train back to NJP. Expect some waiting at jeep stands; that is part of the price.

Why this trip

  • Two cool nights in Samsing's tea garden
  • Rocky Island and the Suntalekhola hanging bridge
  • A dawn jeep safari among Jaldapara's rhinos

Good to know

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Can I travel around the Dooars without a car?

Yes. The Dooars line train, highway buses and shared jeeps to the hill villages connect every stop on this loop. It takes more time and some waiting, but costs a fraction of a car. Plan legs for the morning, when services are frequent.

How much does a week in the Dooars cost on a budget?

About ₹13,000 per person for six nights on this plan, roughly ₹1,850 a day, including homestays with meals, transport and three shared safari seats. Add a few thousand for extra safaris, Totopara or a private jeep.

Is this trip good for solo travellers?

Very good. Homestays happily take single guests, shared jeeps and trains suit solo budgets, and other guests are often keen to share safari jeeps. Single-room supplements are small or nil in many homestays. Keep to daylight travel.

How reliable are shared jeeps to Samsing?

They run from Chalsa and Metali several times a day, mostly in the morning, leaving when full. Afternoon departures are fewer. If you miss one, a local car to Samsing costs roughly ₹800–1,200, which you can share.

Which is better for rhinos, Gorumara or Jaldapara?

Jaldapara has about five times as many rhinos and open grassland, so sightings are more likely. Gorumara's watchtowers often give closer, calmer views at the salt licks. This loop includes both for the best chance.

Can we do the loop in reverse?

Yes. Start with Jaldapara, then Samsing, then Lataguri, finishing close to Siliguri. Train timings may decide the direction. Ending in Lataguri means a shorter final leg back to NJP before your onward journey.

What should a backpacker pack for the Dooars?

A light daypack, layers for cold dawns and warm days, a rain jacket, sturdy shoes, a torch, a power bank, binoculars, insect repellent, a water bottle and cash. Muted colours for safaris. ID for safari bookings.

Are there hostels in the Dooars?

Few or none in the backpacker hostel sense. Homestays with dinner and breakfast at ₹1,200–1,800 per person fill that role and are better value. Forest corporation tents at Murti and Suntalekhola are another cheap option.

Is it safe to travel by train in the Dooars?

Yes. Trains are slow and can be crowded on market days, but are generally safe. Keep bags close, check the timetable the day before and avoid arriving at small stations after dark without a pickup arranged.
