Nine slow nights from Samsing to Jayanti

The Dooars at walking pace, for people with time: two nights in Samsing's tea hills, two on the Murti for Gorumara and Chapramari, two at Madarihat for Jaldapara, one in Chilapata forest and two on the Jayanti riverbed inside Buxa Tiger Reserve. Your own car, private jeeps and the best rooms available. About ₹51,000 per person for two.

Nine nights is long enough that the Dooars stop being a checklist. You can spend a whole morning in a tea garden at Samsing, skip a safari when you are tired, and sit on the Jayanti riverbed until the hills across in Bhutan turn dark. Each base has two nights except Chilapata, so you unpack only five times.

The route runs west to east, from the hills above Chalsa down to the parks and on to Buxa, then back to NJP in one long drive of about five hours. The car and private jeeps are the main costs. Floods in October 2025 hit Gorumara and shut Jaldapara for a time, and all the parks close from mid-June to mid-September. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is nine nights in the Dooars too much?

For most people a week is plenty, but nine nights suits those who want to slow down, travel with older parents or photograph wildlife properly. Two nights at most stops means less packing and more time on riverbeds and in tea gardens.

How much does a 10-day car cost?

Roughly ₹28,000–32,000 for a car with driver from NJP and back in 2025–26, depending on the vehicle and season. Split between two, about ₹15,000 each; between four, half that. Drivers' stays and meals are usually included in the rate; confirm when you book.

Can we add Buxa Fort?

Yes. From Jayanti, drive about 30 km to Santalabari and walk the 5 km stone path up to the fort, about two hours each way. It makes a full day. Swap it for the Mahakal walk, or add a night in a Buxa homestay.

What is Jayanti like?

Jayanti is a forest village inside Buxa Tiger Reserve on a river that spreads into a wide bed of pale stones below the Bhutan hills. There are homestays, small lodges and some private cottages. Evenings on the riverbed are the main attraction.

Is this trip good for photographers?

Very. You get grassland rhinos at Jaldapara, watchtower views at Gorumara, gaur at Chapramari, dense forest at Chilapata, tea gardens at Samsing and river landscapes at Jayanti. Dawn and dusk light in winter is soft and misty. Camera fees apply in parks.

Can older travellers manage this?

Yes. The drives are short except the first and last days, rooms are on flat ground, and safaris are in jeeps. The Mahakal walk is optional and can be shortened. Plan midday rests and carry any medicines, as pharmacies are only in the bigger towns.

Will we see tigers in Buxa?

Almost certainly not. Buxa is a tiger reserve, but tigers there are extremely rare. Expect elephants, gaur, deer, many birds and beautiful forest. Rhinos are best seen at Jaldapara and Gorumara.

What if a park is closed?

Parks close for the monsoon from about mid-June to mid-September and may close briefly after floods or for census work. If one is closed, swap its safari for another park or a river walk. Check current status before you travel.

Do we need cash?

Yes. ATMs are available in Malbazar, Madarihat, Hasimara and Alipurduar, but not in Samsing, Murti, Chilapata or Jayanti, and card machines are unreliable. UPI works where network does. Carry enough for tips, guides and snacks.
