The Bengal Dooars run along the foot of Bhutan from the Teesta east to the Sankosh river, and most visitors see only Lataguri. This trip goes west to east: up into the river valleys and tea hills first, where nights are cool, then down into the parks, finishing at Chilapata near Hasimara, from where the drive back to NJP is about four hours.

A car and driver for eight days is the big cost, and it buys freedom: no waiting for jeeps, private safari slots and stops wherever the tea or the river looks good. Rooms are the best forest corporation and WBTDC grades, or good private hotels where those are full. Floods in October 2025 hit Gorumara and shut Jaldapara for a time; check current status before you travel.

  • A tea-garden night at Samsing and Rocky Island

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is a week too long for the Dooars?

Not if you want variety. A week lets you see the river valleys and tea hills as well as the two rhino parks and Chilapata. Most people only do Lataguri in two nights and miss the rest. Each stop here has a different landscape and pace.

How much does an 8-day car cost?

Roughly ₹24,000–28,000 for a car with driver from NJP and back in 2025–26, depending on the vehicle and season, including local runs to safari gates. Split between two, that is about ₹12,000–14,000 each; between four, half that.

Which month is best for this circuit?

November to March for wildlife, cool weather and dry roads. December and January dawns are cold and misty. October is good once parks reopen. April and May are hot in the plains but pleasant at Jhalong and Samsing. Parks close from mid-June to mid-September.

Can we do the circuit in reverse?

Yes. Start at Chilapata, which is about 4–4.5 hours from NJP, and end at Jhalong, about 3 hours away. Safari availability may decide the direction; book the parks first and fit the river valleys around them.

Are the forest lodges comfortable?

They are clean and simple rather than luxurious, with good settings close to rivers and forests. Book the best grade for attached bathrooms and better beds. Meals are basic but fresh. Where corporation rooms are full, good private resorts nearby fill the gap.

How many safaris does this include?

Five private jeep safaris: two in Gorumara, one in Chapramari, one in Jaldapara and one in Chilapata, plus an elephant safari at Jaldapara if the forest department is running it. Extra slots can be added if available, at about ₹2,500–4,000 per jeep.

Will we see a rhino?

Very likely, though never guaranteed. Jaldapara's grasslands give the best odds, with about 330 rhinos. Gorumara's watchtowers add more chances. Dawn and dusk are best. Winter, when grass is cut or burned, gives clearer views.

What should we pack?

Layers for cold dawns and warm afternoons, a light jacket, muted safari colours, closed shoes, binoculars, insect repellent, sunscreen, a torch, power bank and ID. Carry some cash, as card machines in the Dooars are unreliable.

Is mobile network available?

Highway towns like Lataguri, Malbazar and Madarihat have good Jio and Airtel coverage. Jhalong, Samsing and Chilapata are patchy, and the parks themselves are weak. Download tickets and maps before you leave Siliguri.
